A small historical reference

Makarov - a town in the Sakhalin region, located on the east coast of Sakhalin Island, in the estuary of river Makarov. Date of establishment - 1892. Previous name - Selyutora (until 1905), Shirutoru (until 1946). The city history begins with the founding in 1892 of the village Selyutora, which means in translation from the Ainu "village on the land."

In 1905, as a result of defeat in the Russian-Japanese war of 1904-1905 the southern part of Sakhalin Island was ceded to Japan. The Japanese built in Selyutore pulp and paper factories, mines and other enterprises. The village became a city, its Japanese name - Siritori (Shirutoru). After the end of World War II in 1945 in the USSR. In 1946 it was renamed into Makarov, in honor of the Russian naval commander and oceanographer Admiral Stepan Osipovich Makarov.
