A small historical reference

Nevelsk - a town in Sakhalin region, located in the south-west of the island of Sakhalin, on the coast Nevelsk gulf of the Tatar Strait Sea of Japan. Date founding - the beginning of XX century. The first written mention - 1789. Previous name - Ponto-Casey (until 1905), Honto (until 1946). The city history begins with the Ainu settlements Ponto-Casey, which means "at the edge of the lake," and Turumay. In 1789 there were Russian explorers.

From 1855 to 1875 in Honto was a double (Russian and Japanese) administration. From 1905 to 1945 Honto was a member of the Japanese province Karafuto and is an urban parish in the county Maoka. In 1912 in 20 km north of Honto built the first Sakhalin fish hatchery on the river Assanay (Sokolniki). Until 1945 in the city was the Imperial military school. In 1945 Honto became part of the Soviet Union and was renamed in Nevelsk, in honor after Admiral Gennady Ivanovicha Nevelskoy. In 1946 was restored sea fishing port and created sudoremzavod.
