Pevek - center of Chaun district of the Chukotka Autonomous District, located on the eastern shore Peveksky strait connecting Chaun Bay and the East Siberian Sea. The northernmost city of the USSR. Date of establishment - 1933 year. The city history begins with the discovery of tin mine Pyrkakay (which was later renamed the Red army soldier), about 70 km from the town of Pevek. Later it was opened and other deposits of tin and then gold. An important regional port of the Northern Sea Route through the natural harbor (Chaunskaya Bay).
