Severo-Kurilsk - a town in the Sakhalin region, located on the island Paramushiro (Kuril Islands), on the shore of the Second Kuril Strait. Date of establishment - 1898. Previous name - Kashiwabara (until 1946). The city history begins with the landing of a group of Japanese volunteers under the command of Lieutenant Naval Reserve Gunji Sigetada in 1898 on the island Paramushiro and grounds where a fishing village Kashiwabara.

In 1946, the village Kasivabara in connection with the transition of the USSR was renamed the Severo-Kurilsk. In 1952, the city was virtually destroyed by the tsunami.
