Geography: The capital of the Republic of Buryatia, located on both banks of the Selenga River where it meets the Uda River, in Ivolgina - Uda intermountain basin, in the central part of the country.
Date of foundation: 1666. Town Status city with 1690. Early names - Udi (winter houses until 1680) Udi forpost-prison (up to 1690), Udinsk (up to 1735), Verkhneudinsk (until 1934).
History: In 1666 Russian Cossacks were laid Udi (winter houses) to collect tribute from the local population, which was located on the high right bank of the Uda River near its mouth. From 1680 - Udi forpost-prison, through which Russian trade caravans going to China. The city became the main place of storage of the goods and the formation of the caravan, is sent to the Nerchinsk region. In 1689 - the fortress, known as Verkhneudinsk.
In the 1780s appear soap factories, lard melted, flour mills, handicraft workshops. The main occupation of the residents is trade and transport of goods, horticulture and arable farming. In 1846 in city began working glassworks merchant Kurbatov.
Economy: Extraction of minerals ("Buryatzoloto"), engineering and metalworking (aircraft factory, locomotive-car-repair factory, instrument making union, the plant "Elektromashina", Shipyard, etc.), the forest industry (Baikal Forest Company), food industry (pasta factory, confectionery, milling plant, bakery, poultry plant), light industry (tonkosukonnaya manufacture, felting production).
Sights: Houses of the middle class and merchants (house of petty bourgeois DM Paholkova), trading houses, churches (Odigitrievsky Cathedral), the building schools (district school, female grammar school), Big Gostiny Yard (shopping arcade merchant Kurbatov), construction of the XIX century.
