A small historical reference

Kuril'sk - a town in the Sakhalin region, located on the island of Iturup (Kuril Islands) at the mouth of the river Kurilka on the banks of the Kuril Gulf of Okhotsk. Date of establishment - XVIII century. Previous name - Syana (until 1947). The city history begins with the founding in the late XVIII century settlement by Russian explorers. In 1855 the island of Iturup went to Japan as part of the Treaty of Shimoda South Kurils, taken in 1945 by the Red Army and incorporated into the Soviet Union.

The main occupation of the local population (cities and towns-satellites) - fishing, fish farming and fish processing. A few kilometers from Kurilsk is the sea port (located in the village Kitovoy) and the port trawler fleet - in the village Reidovo, fishery on the reproduction of humpback salmon, seismic station, weather station, the station warning of a tsunami, museum.
