Verkhoyansk - city in Verkhoyansk ulus of Yakutia, located north of the central part of the republic, on the right bank of the river Yana. Verkhoyansk - the third largest of the population (1150 persons) of the smallest towns in Russia with the status of the city. One of the coldest places on earth, the coldest city in the world. The lowest temperature -67,8 & deg; C was recorded here in February 1892. Date of establishment - 1638. The city history begins with the Cossack wintering Posnik Ivanov.

The basis of the city's economy - agriculture (animal husbandry, breeding, herding) and fur. Centre timber item. Operates river jetty.
